概要
1970年代から一貫して《光》の探究を続け、国際的な評価を得た写真家・田原桂一は、惜しくも病のため本年6月に他界いたしましたが、亡くなる直前まで本展の準備に力を注いでいました。今回展示する写真作品46点は、世界的に活躍するダンサー・田中泯との類まれなコラボレーション（1978～80年および2016年）の中から選び抜いたもので、展覧会の形では日本初公開となります。また、会期中には田中泯のソロダンスパフォーマンスも行います。
1971年、20歳で渡仏した田原桂一は、日本の光とは異質なヨーロッパの光に出会い、衝撃を受けました。そして《光》そのものを探究するため、パリを拠点に写真（＝Photography 直訳：光で描く絵）を撮り続け、高い評価を得ました。一方、1960年代にモダン・ダンサーとして活動を始めた田中泯は、1974年、独自の舞踊を求めて活動の幅を広げ、そのユニークな身体表現で注目されました。
1978 年秋、パリで邂逅した二人は《光と身体の関係性》の探究を始めます。ヨーロッパ、アメリカ、そして日本。さまざまな都市や大自然の場と切り結び、異なる光や大気や季節に反応するダンサーを、写真家がイメージに焼き付ける─この濃密なフォトセッションは1980年まで続きます。しかし、生み出された写真は、何故か発表されることなく筐底に秘められたまま歳月が流れました。
2016年、それぞれキャリアを積み重ねてきた二人は《原点回帰》を決め、過去のコラボレーションを写真集「Photosynthesis 1978-1980」（発行：スーパーラボ）にまとめると同時に、36年ぶりにフォトセッションを再開、新作を撮り始めました。奇しくも原美術館は最初のフォトセッションと同時期、1979年にオープンいたしましたが、このたび、彼らのコラボレーションの成果を展覧会として余すところ無く紹介いたします。また、本展会期注中、田中泯は二人のコラボレーションの締めくくりとして、「第5回ハラアニュアル展」（1985）以来久々に当館でダンスパフォーマンスを行います。
展示の内容と見所
1978～80年に撮影したものから41点、2016年撮影の新作から5点、計・写真作品46点を展示（すべてモノクローム）。
その《場》の光や空気を受け止め自らの身体で表現する田中泯。その姿を、色彩を一切排して純粋に光と影の織り成す鮮烈なイメージへと昇華させる田原桂一。二人の表現者が切り結んで創り出した、緊張感あふれる美しさが圧倒的です。
田原桂一（たはらけいいち）
1951年京都府出身。フランス・アルル国際写真フェスティバル新人大賞（1977）、木村伊兵衛写真賞（1985）、フランス芸術文化勲章シュバリエ（1993）など受賞多数。写真だけでなく、《光》を探究する延長で彫刻・環境造形も手がけ、2004年に東京都庭園美術館で「田原桂一光の彫刻」展を開催。2017年、チェコ・プラハ国立美術館で個展「Photosynthesis1978-1980」を開催。2017年没。

1945年東京都出身。クラシックバレエとモダンダンスを学び、1974年から独自のダンス・身体表現を追究。1978年以降海外でも活躍、高い評価を得る。1985年山村へ移り住み、農業を礎とした舞踊活動を継続中。映画「たそがれ清兵衛」（山田洋次監督、2002）以降、俳優としても活動。著書に「僕はずっと裸だった」(2011)、「意身伝心」(2013)など。フランス芸術文化勲章シュバリエ（1990）他受賞多数。

In 1971, at the age of 20, Keiichi Tahara went to France. Fascinated by the light in Europe, the quality of which was unlike any he had seen in Japan, he made the nature of light itself a focus of exploration, and with Paris as his base, went on to win high acclaim for his photographic work. Min Tanaka, on the other hand, began his activities as a modern dancer during the 1960s. His career took off in 1974 with the development of a unique new style of dance expression that attracted wide attention.
By chance during the autumn of 1978, the two artists met and decided to explore the relationship between physical light and the human body. In photo shoots that continued from 1978 to 1980, the photographer captured on film images of the dancer reacting to different kinds of light, atmospheres and seasons within various urban and natural environments in Europe, America, and Japan, images that were stowed away unseen over the years. In 2016, after a hiatus of 36 years, the two decided to "return to their origins," to resume their photo sessions and begin making new work again. They also published the photo book Photosynthesis 1978 -1980.
Until his passing due to illness this past June, Tahara had been making preparations for this exhibition which will present 46 carefully selected photographs (all black-and-white), 41 of which were taken during the '78 - '80 period and 5 in the year 2016. To mark the culmination of his collaboration with Tahara, Min Tanaka will hold several dance performances over the course of the exhibition, providing a rare chance to view this legendary artist who first danced at the museum in the Fifth Hara Annual exhibition in 1985.

Keiichi Tahara
Born in Kyoto in 1951, Tahara was a recipient of many awards, including the Grand Prix des Jeunes Photographes in Arles, France (1977), the Kimura Ihei Prize in Japan (1985) and the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres in France (1993). In recent years, he had expanded his activities into the fields of sculpture and environmental art as an extension of his exploration of light. In 2004, he held the solo exhibition Keiichi Tahara - Light Sculptures at the Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum, and in 2017, the solo exhibition Photosynthesis 1987-1980 at the National Gallery in Prague, Czech Republic. He passed away in 2017.
Min Tanaka
Born in Tokyo in 1945, Tanaka studied classical ballet and modern dance and started his activities as a dancer in the 1960s. In the 1970s, he developed a unique style of dance of his own, garnering critical acclaim both in Japan and abroad. In 1978, he moved to a mountain village where he began and continues to explore dance through a farming life. He is also an actor, first appearing in Twilight Samurai directed by Yoji Yamada in 2002. His many awards include the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres, France (1990). He is also the author of such books as I Was Naked All The Way (2011) and Conscious Body, Contagious Mind (2013).
